Traditional Braces

The Time-Tested Method

The Time-tested method

Traditional braces have withstood the test of time for one simple reason—they work! The brackets and wires help to straighten your teeth, while rubber bands can be used to improve your bite. For patients worried about complying with the daily requirements of clear aligners, but are also concerned with the esthetics of traditional metal braces, we also offer ceramic (tooth colored) brackets that can be an excellent compromise. Regardless of your goals, traditional braces can and will achieve the smile you want.

How Long Will I Need To Wear Braces?

This is the very first question many potential patients have when they visit an orthodontist. Length of treatment varies greatly depending on the complexity of your case.  For minor misalignment issues, treatment may be as short as four to six months. On the other hand, particularly complex cases may require treatment for as long as three years. (The American Association of Orthodontics cites average orthodontic treatment as 22 months.)  At your initial consultation appointment, Dr. Collins will evaluate your individual case and explain what your treatment will consist of and how long you can expect it to take.

Doing Your part.

Healthy teeth are essential to a great smile. Your orthodontist can straighten/align your teeth and correct your bite, but to achieve the best results it is critical that patients brush and floss properly throughout treatment. Some things to keep in mind:

  • At your initial appointment Dr. Collins will review how to care for your braces including the correct method for brushing and flossing, as well as what foods to avoid.
  • You will be given all the supplies needed, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and floss threaders to adequately care for your teeth during orthodontic treatment.
  • Excellent oral hygiene helps prevent staining and scarring of your teeth during your time in braces.
