Early Treatment

The Value of a Head Start

The Value of a Head Start

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children be seen by an orthodontist by the age of seven. For most patients, this initial visit will simply be a preliminary check, with formal treatment beginning once all adult teeth are present.  While orthodontic treatment may not begin at this time, these introductory visits prove incredibly beneficial.  As with all of the consult appointments at Collins Orthodontics, this visit, and all future “check” visits are complimentary.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BOOKING MY CHILD AN APPOINTMENT AT AGE 7?

Booking your child’s first exam are the age of seven will allow you to learn of any potential orthodontic problems that might be present or developing.  Some problems, like crossbites or underbites, are treated far more successfully while the child is still young. (With these cases delaying treatment can cause the cases to become more severe.)

In the majority of visits, parents learn that everything is developing appropriately and treatment should not begin until all adult teeth are in. Regardless of the diagnosis, these introductory visits are beneficial for parents and kids alike. Parents will get the peace of mind of knowing their child is in good health and can discuss any questions they have about the process or costs with Dr. Collins. Meanwhile, your child will become more acclimated to an orthodontic office environment.

WHO NEEDS EARLY TREATMENT?

If your child exhibits any of the following, they may be a candidate for early orthodontic treatment and should not wait for further dental development:

  • Improper jaw growth (crossbites/underbites)
  • Issues with tooth eruption and crowding
  • Thumb or Tongue habits
  • Significantly crooked teeth that may result in discomfort or taunting
